I am a geneticist interested in how genes and the environment interact to generate the phenotypic variation we observe in populations. I apply models in genetics and evolution to solve problems in conservation, forensics, and ecology.

Background
Dr. Drew Sauve is an Assistant Professor in the Forensic Science program in the Faculty of Science. His research lab uses genetic and statistical methods to predict phenotypes, evolution, and demographics. For example, can we predict an individual's size or shape from information we have about its relatives and the environment in which it grew up? Dr. Sauve is interested in quantitative genetics and has applied approaches from this field to study how Arctic seabirds are responding to climate change and whether evolution is occurring in zoo populations. He works with family trees, including molecularly reconstructed wild pedigrees in wild populations, studbooks maintained by zoos and conservation breeding programs, and human genealogies and SNP databases.
Dr. Sauve completed his graduate degrees (MSc & PhD) at Queen's University and, during this time, worked closely with researchers at the CNRS in Montpellier. He works with zoos and conservation breeding organizations across the globe and maintains connections with long-term wild seabird monitoring on Middleton Island, Alaska.
